When a friend asked me to go on a ski trip to Austria I replied “Sure I ski” not mentioning that I had limited ski experience. So, in anticipation of the trip, I updated my wardrobe and looked forward to experiencing the Alps.
I enrolled in ski school for what I thought would be a refresher, but soon found myself in over my head. In blinding conditions, we were forced to travel by bus to a lower elevation dashing any hope of skiing just outside the hotel. After a challenging day on the slopes, I returned somewhat dejected but determined to return the next day. “I am not a quitter” I repeated to myself. So, I returned to school only to find that I had been demoted to a lower group AND had mistakenly picked up the wrong skis. I took this as an omen and proceeded to return my equipment but kept the poles.
I decided to salvage the trip by doing some hiking. Equipped with my camera and a new found determination I set off on my new adventure. I encountered this hiker at the crest of the hill, and I couldn’t help but wonder if she was a fellow “ski school dropout” or just purely in the moment.
